Hi Guys,

I saw your posts on the OCAU forums and I'm interested in getting some good speakers for my computer (to replace the the crappy $2 5.1 computer speakers I have now).

I'd like to keep the surround setup for movies and games. What I was thinking was maybe M5 MKII speakers for the front left and right, and maybe add pair of M4 speakers for the rears later on.

I don't really have room for a centre channel and the room is too small to need a sub (and I don't like lots of bass anyway). So that makes for a 4 channel setup.

Would those speakers work OK together? M5s for the front and M4s for the rears?

That sort of brings the problem of the amplifier, since I'd need 4 channels. You said you had the 5.1 DSE amp in stock, how does it sound compared to the Digitech?

I'm leaning towards a stereo setup for now, and I'll worry about the rear speakers a bit later. I mostly want it for good quality music anyway, I've gotten some decent headphones recently and now my speakers sound like utter crap in comparison :)

Cheers,
Matt.

BTW, your website says you're out of stock on the M5 MK2 kits until september 2007, I guess those kits are in stock now?

I ordered some at the start of December and they got here early January, so I think that's an outdated notice. : )

For a computer (especially in a small room) I'd probably stick with M4s. The M5s are pretty damn large for computer speakers. I have a 20" monitor (a tall one too) and they dominate it. They're about as wide as my PC case... I use them next to the computer instead of either side, but they still are pretty big for bookshelf speakers. If you have a 19" monitor they'll be about the same height. :)

It's also worth noting that if you're using MP3s and/or a standard quality soundcard with LSK speakers then you won't be getting the full benefit. If you need a quality soundcard have a look at the M-Audio 2496 and the Delta-1010LT. I own both and they leave Creative cards crying in a corner. You can hear the difference between a thirty dollar Audigy and one of M-Audio's cards even on cheap computer speakers, and with a good amplifier they are the best way to get sound out of a PC short of a Korg studio production card or an external sound rack. Worth noting that they list their channel numbers as mono (i.e. 4 analog channels means two stereo channels) and try importing one from the USA, you save around 50%, the Australian distributor for them is price-gouging something vicious.

Hope that helps. : )

Hi Yorick,

Cheers for the feedback. I've measured up the space the speakers would take, they don't look all that big. I've got a 24" monitor so they shouldn't look too out of proportion. From the measurements page they only seem to be about 5cm taller and 3cm wider than the M4s. I'd also be using them at parties as well.

The speakers would be sitting about 60 - 100cm away from me though, not right next to my screen.

As for the sound card, I was looking at the Auzentech Prelude to replace my old Audigy2. From what I've read its quite a good sounding card.

I'm a little biased to be honest, as I am a huge fan of the M5s over the M4s. If you're planning to use them for parties or as home theatre mains then the M5s will obviously be better (my dad runs a two-channel setup with just M5s, and it gets pretty loud). They are a bit larger, though, as you can see from the tech specs page for each of them.

Running M5s as mains and M4s as rears is not as ideal as running identical speakers for both, but to be honest I think you'd be hard pressed to notice a difference with regular usage, especially from a computer.

The DSE 5.1 amp is pretty comparable to the Digitech in terms of sound quality - it has a little less power, but balances this with the fact that you can run a full 5.1 setup. I would probably recommend the Digitech for dedicated music listening, but the fact that it only has two channels makes it unsuited to your needs.

edit: Also thanks for the reminder about the out-of-date notice on the M5s, since then our latest batch has all been shipped so we should have some more ready by this Friday or Monday.
