Kit Purchasing Guide

This page is designed to assist you with selecting a kit which best suits the application you have in mind for it.

The key checklist items to choosing a speaker are...

  1. Decide what application you need the speaker for.
Is it destined for a home theatre system, a music system or both? If you want speakers for high quality music reproduction then these typically are more expensive than those designed purely for home theatre. If you want speakers for both then decide what percentage of your listening will be for each.
  2. If the speaker you need is a centre channel, what main left/right speakers does it match?
Look for a centre channel that uses the same drivers (woofer and tweeter) as the left/right speakers.
  3. What impedance speakers do you need?
Most speakers today are either 4 ohm or 8 ohm speakers (we sell both). 4 ohm speakers can be a little louder and more dynamic but they draw more current from your amplifier and usually require a better quality amp to power them.
  4. How big is your room and how loud do you want the system to play?
A rule of thumb is that the larger the room the more acoustic power you need. Acoustic power is a combination of the RMS power your amplifier outputs and the sensitivity of the speakers you choose. A speaker rated at 85dB is relatively insensitive and requires double the amplifier power to generate the same volume level as a speaker rated at 88dB. Power ratings on speakers (eg "100W RMS") are generally meaningless and not a good gauge of a speakers capabilities or quality.
  5. What sort of music do you listen to?
Most people reply "a wide range" when asked this question but in fact tend to listen to one sort (rock/pop/jazz) more critically than another. As a rough rule, rock and pop music is the least technically demanding of a speaker so a cheaper speaker is capable of reproducing this material better than classical or vocal tracks. A better speaker will reproduce all equally well.
  6. Size and suitability.
Do you want tower type floor standing speakers (large), stand mounted monitors (medium) or small wall mountable bookshelves (small). Whilst size is some indication of overall performance it is very difficult to use this alone as a guide to a speaker, especially when comparing different brands. The cost of stands and or brackets needs to be factored into the total price of the bookshelf or monitor style speakers as these really cannot be just mounted on top of a cabinet.
  7. To sub or not?
If you are constructing a home theatre system, then a subwoofer really is mandatory. Some folks prefer, however, to listen to their music sans sub woofer and in this case larger main speakers are usually the better option. The "sub/sat" systems usually require the sub to be on all the time.

The Loud Speaker Kit offers three ranges of kit speakers and a dedicated subwoofer range.
