The M5 Gen II speaker is a revision of the highly popular Gen I speaker.
The main change is a switch to the Peerless Engineering 5" shielded woofer, which has a smoother midrange performance than its predecessor. It also features a round decor ring and thus the cutout is no longer rebated, making veneering this speaker even easier than before.
This high performance, small sized bookshelf speaker equally suits both music applications and home cinema. It is an ideal all purpose speaker and works equally well as mains, rear surrounds or stand alone speakers. It is also well suited to near field monitoring work in home studios or live music applications. It's high quality shielding means it can be used in close proximity to TVs and PC monitors.
The M5 has a very smooth, mellow sound with excellent staging and imaging and a very tonally accurate midrange. The crossover is a fully computer optimized 4th order (acoustic) design and the resulting power handling and efficiency are both high for this speaker, making it well suited to larger rooms and to amplifiers with a wider range of power options compared to, say, the M4.
Being stand or wall mountable, it offers a degree of flexibility compared to the tower speakers. It is also a shielded design with perfect matching to the MKII C5 and F5 speakers for home theatre use. The M5 is midway between the M4 and the M6 in size.
The M5 MKII uses a 5.25" shielded treated paper/rubber woofer from Peerless Engineering of Denmark, mated to a Danish made Vifa mylar dome tweeter. It uses a 12mm MDF cabinet for inherent flatness with a smooth frequency response and a crisp accurate sound. Bass is excellent for such a small speaker, although as with all small speakers it will benefit from the addition of a subwoofer for home theatre applications. Dual front firing ports means that additional bass can be extracted from the speaker by wall mounting.

Note: suggested amplifier power ratings are nominal only, there are a wide range of factors which affect the performance and suitability of any speaker/amplifier matchup. Damage to speakers is usually caused by an underpowered amp which is clipping due to being driven too hard. Damage to speaker drivers and kit components caused by overdriving the amplifier or the speaker is not covered by warranties. In general, the M5 kits will suit most commonly available Pro-Logic DD/DTS receivers.
